53 pixels per degree

Clarity stated by Pimax: 3840 × 3552 pixels per eye over a 116° horizontal field of view. The higher the figure, the easier it is to read small cockpit labels and gauges.

What changes on a night approach

OLED pixels switch off, so a dark cockpit is actually dark and the approach lights stand out against real black instead of a gray glow. Pimax itself recommends this engine for space sims and night flying, and that's exactly the brief.

It doesn't give up much in daylight either: 53 PPD on 3840 × 3552 pixels per eye keeps the gauges crisp, and 116° horizontal gives you a little more side window than any other headset with a stated figure here.

What your PC needs

DisplayPort 1.4a plus USB-C, with a detachable DisplayPort cable. Tracking is inside-out, with Lighthouse optional. Eye tracking drives dynamic foveated rendering, and Pimax adds hand tracking.

It's the same Crystal Super chassis as the QLED version, and Pimax hasn't published the weight. That also opens a door: if you already own a Crystal Super QLED, Pimax sells the micro-OLED optical engine on its own for $1,199 in the US.

Great if you…

  • fly at night or in space and want true blacks
  • want the top score in our VR data
  • already own a Crystal Super and want the OLED engine for it

Skip it if…

  • you want the sharpest numbers: the Crystal Super QLED states 57 PPD for $600 less
  • you want a published weight before a long-haul session
  • the budget is under two thousand dollars

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED good for flight sim?

On paper, the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED offers 53 pixels per degree (3840 × 3552 per eye), a 116° horizontal field of view, a direct DisplayPort video link from the PC, without the video compression used by Wi-Fi or USB streaming. Pimax recommends this engine for space sims and night flying, naming Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous. PC flight sims such as Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, X-Plane 12 and DCS World run in VR through OpenXR or SteamVR: check the VR requirements of your sim before buying. This is a spec-sheet comparison, not a hands-on test.

Can you read the instruments with the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED?

Pimax states 53 PPD with 3840 × 3552 pixels per eye. Pixels per degree (PPD) measure how many pixels cover one degree of your view: the higher the figure, the easier it is to read small gauges, switch labels and the text on flight displays without leaning in.

How does the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED connect to a PC?

DisplayPort 1.4a + USB-C (detachable DisplayPort cable). The headset receives the video signal directly from the graphics card.

Does the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED need base stations?

No. Inside-out SLAM (4 cameras); Lighthouse optional.

Can you fly the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED with a HOTAS or a yoke?

Yes: your HOTAS, yoke and rudder pedals connect to the PC, not to the headset, so any PC flight control works alongside it. In VR you cannot see your hands, so controls you can find by feel help.

What score does the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED get?

The Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED scores 9.1/10 ("Excellent") in the VR headset category, ranking 1 of 12. The score is calculated from the official specs and the checked US price, with no hands-on test.

How much does the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED cost?

The US price checked on October 29, 2026 is $2,199. It may have changed since.
