If you only read one line: buy the clarity your graphics card can feed. The Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED at $2,199 leads, and the Bigscreen Beyond 2 at $959 is the lightest headset we track at 107 g, tied with the Beyond 2e. Here are all 12 PC VR headsets, ranked. Spec-sheet comparison, not a hands-on test: scores from official spec sheets and US prices.
Feed the GPU. The more pixels, the more graphics card you need to hold a steady frame rate over an airliner cockpit. Eye tracking with dynamic foveated rendering eases that load where the sim supports it, and seven headsets in this list have it built in.
Beyond 2 or 2e. The $200 between them buys eye tracking, and Bigscreen says it cannot be added to a Beyond 2 later. Decide now. If eye tracking is a must, compare Dream Air vs Beyond 2e.
Cameras or base stations. Inside-out tracking works out of the box. The Beyonds need SteamVR base stations, sold separately; the Crystal Light can take an optional Lighthouse faceplate. In a cockpit you only look around, so either works: it's mostly a question of what you already own.
Weight over a long leg. From 107 g for the Beyond 2 to 815 g for the Crystal Light, the spread is wide, and on a two-hour leg your neck will notice. The VR for flight sim guide covers comfort and setup.
The ranking in detail
What stands out: the first eight places all go to headsets with a native DisplayPort link, from the Crystal Super Micro-OLED down to the Valve Index. The cheapest three of them are the Index, on sale at $399.20, the Pimax Crystal Light at $899, with 35 PPD and an optional Lighthouse faceplate, and the Bigscreen Beyond 2 at $959. Here's Crystal Light vs Beyond 2 if you're choosing between the last two.
Then comes the streaming end. The HTC VIVE Focus Vision at $1,299 also has a wired DisplayPort mode, with a kit sold separately. The Valve Steam Frame at $1,059 streams over an included Wi-Fi 6E adapter, with eye-tracked foveated streaming; Steam Frame vs Quest 3 is the wireless duel. The Meta Quest 3S closes the list at $349.99, the cheapest way in: 20 PPD through Fresnel lenses.
