Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Series X|S supports dedicated flight controls, but only hardware made for the console will be recognized. Why Xbox compatibility is specific

A Windows PC recognizes almost any USB joystick. A console only accepts accessories built and licensed for it, so the same product often exists in different versions for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Thrustmaster sells the T.Flight Hotas One for Xbox and PC, and the T.Flight Hotas 5 Microsoft Flight Simulator Edition for PS5, PS4 and PC.

Watch outCheck the exact model name and the platform list on the official page before you buy. A PlayStation or PC-only version will not work on an Xbox.

How Xbox flight controls connect

The console has a limited number of ports and accepts a limited number of accessories, so manufacturers often chain devices together. This is where Xbox setups differ the most from PC setups.

  • Thrustmaster TFRP: USB on PC; on Xbox, PS5 and PS4 it plugs into the back of a compatible Thrustmaster stick or yoke, according to Thrustmaster.
  • Turtle Beach VelocityOne Rudder: on Xbox, it connects through the pass-through cable of the VelocityOne Flight (or Flightstick); on PC it connects directly.
  • Honeycomb Bravo and Charlie: Honeycomb lists Xbox only in addition to the Alpha XPC or the Honeycomb Xbox hub.
  • Honeycomb Alpha, VelocityOne Flight, TCA Yoke Boeing: listed for Xbox as standalone devices by their manufacturers.
TipPlan your setup around one main device that the console accepts, then add the pedals or quadrant from the same brand, or one that its manufacturer explicitly lists as compatible.

What about PlayStation?

In our data, the PlayStation options are the T.Flight Hotas 5 Microsoft Flight Simulator Edition (PS5, PS4 and PC) and the T.Flight Rudder Pedals, which Thrustmaster lists for PS5 and PS4 through a compatible Thrustmaster stick. Check that the game you want to fly supports flight controls on your console before buying.

If you also play on PC, every product in our HOTAS catalog and our yoke catalog lists its platforms, so you can filter by console.

Before you buy for Xbox: a checklist

  1. Check the platform list on the official page: it must mention Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One.
  2. Check how each extra device connects: directly, through a stick or yoke, or through a hub.
  3. Count the ports and accessories your setup needs, and keep the cables short enough to reach the console.
  4. Make sure the game you fly supports the type of control you buy on console.
  5. Keep the receipt and check the return policy of the merchant in case a device is not recognized.

Xbox setups are usually simpler than PC setups: fewer devices, fewer cables, and less software to install. Starting with a yoke or a HOTAS from one brand, then adding that brand’s pedals or quadrant, is the safest route.

Yoke or HOTAS on Xbox?

The choice follows the aircraft you fly, exactly as on PC. Microsoft Flight Simulator includes many light aircraft and airliners, which suit a yoke; jets, helicopters and aerobatic aircraft suit a stick. On Xbox, the stick option in our data is the T.Flight Hotas One, while the yoke options are the Alpha, the VelocityOne Flight and the TCA Yoke Boeing Edition.

The VelocityOne Flight stands out for its all-in-one design: Turtle Beach combines the yoke, a throttle quadrant and a trim wheel in one unit, with 12 analog axes and 18 assignable buttons. The Alpha has no throttle levers, so you would add the Bravo quadrant, which Honeycomb lists for Xbox only together with the Alpha or its Xbox hub. Read more in our yoke vs joystick guide.
