Hall effect sensors explained: why they matter in flight sim controls

"Hall effect" appears on more and more flight sim spec sheets. It describes how the control measures its position, and it is one of the criteria with the most weight in our scoring. This guide explains what it means, why it matters over time and how to read the related specs, with examples from our catalog at US prices checked on October 29, 2026.

Potentiometers: the traditional way

For decades, joysticks used potentiometers: a variable resistor with a wiper that slides along a resistive track as the stick moves. The electrical resistance tells the controller where the stick is. It is cheap and simple, which is why it is still used in many products.

The downside is wear. Because the wiper touches the track, dust and friction eventually create noise in the signal. In a flight sim, that shows up as jitter around the center or small jumps in the axis, which makes precise flying harder. Cleaning or replacing the part fixes it, but not every user wants to open their stick.

This is not a reason to rule out every potentiometer product: many budget sticks fly well for years. It is simply the part most likely to age, which is why contactless sensors have become a selling point on modern spec sheets.

How Hall effect sensors work

A Hall effect sensor measures the strength of a magnetic field. A small magnet moves with the stick, and the sensor reads its position without touching it. With no contact, there is no track to wear out, so the reading stays clean over time.

Manufacturers use different names for the same idea. Thrustmaster calls its system H.E.A.R.T (HallEffect AccuRate Technology) on the T.16000M FCS. VKB describes contactless MaRS sensors on the Gladiator NXT EVO. VIRPIL states contactless magnetic sensors on the WarBRD-D base of the Constellation ALPHA Prime. In our data, "magnetic" and "Hall effect" get the same score, because both are contactless.

TipRead the spec sheet carefully: some products use contactless sensors only on the main axes. Thrustmaster states Hall effect sensors for pitch and roll on the T.16000M FCS, and Turtle Beach states a Hall effect sensor on the main yoke axis of the VelocityOne Flight.

What resolution means

Resolution is the number of distinct positions the controller can report on an axis. It is stated in bits: each extra bit doubles the number of steps. A 10-bit axis reports 1,024 positions, a 14-bit axis 16,384 and a 16-bit axis 65,536.

Resolution is not the whole story: the mechanics, the spring and the software also shape how precise a control feels. But between two otherwise similar products, a higher stated resolution is a useful sign, and our scoring gives it its own criterion.

Which products state contactless sensors

In our catalog, contactless sensors are stated across every price range: from the $68.70 URSA MINOR Airline Joystick to high-end throttles and pedals. You can filter by sensor type in the flight stick catalog, the HOTAS catalog and the rudder pedal catalog.

  • Sticks and HOTAS: T.16000M FCS, T.16000M FCS HOTAS, X56, HOTAS Warthog MKII, TCA Officer Pack Airbus, Orion2 HOTAS ViperAce, VelocityOne Flightdeck, Gladiator NXT EVO, URSA MINOR Airline Joystick, ALPHA Prime + WarBRD-D.
  • Yokes: Honeycomb Alpha, TCA Yoke Boeing Edition, VelocityOne Flight.
  • Throttles: TCA Quadrant Airbus Edition, URSA MINOR 32 Throttle Metal.
  • Rudder pedals: Honeycomb Charlie, VelocityOne Rudder, TPR Pendular Rudder.

For the other products, the official page does not state the sensor type. That does not mean they use potentiometers, only that we cannot confirm it from the manufacturer.

How sensors count in our scores

The sensor type carries the most weight among technical criteria for sticks, HOTAS and rudder pedals in our methodology. Hall effect and magnetic sensors score 10, optical 7 and potentiometers 4. When the sensor is not stated, the criterion is removed and the other weights are renormalized, as for any missing value.

Watch outA contactless sensor does not make a control better at everything. Grip shape, spring feel, button layout and software matter just as much day to day, and those are not measured by a spec sheet.

How to check the sensor before you buy

  1. Open the official product page and look for "Hall effect", "magnetic", "contactless" or a named system such as H.E.A.R.T or MaRS.
  2. Check which axes use it: main axes only, or every axis including twist, throttle and rotaries.
  3. Look for a stated resolution in bits for the same axes.
  4. If nothing is stated, assume nothing: compare on the other specs and on the price.

Our product pages show the sensor and resolution exactly as stated by the manufacturer, with a link to the official spec sheet, so you can check the wording yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Are Hall effect joysticks worth it?

They avoid the wear of potentiometer tracks, which keeps the center clean over time. In our data, contactless sticks start at $68.70, so the premium can be small.

What is the difference between Hall effect and magnetic sensors?

Both measure a magnet without contact. Manufacturers use different names for their implementations; our scoring treats them the same way.

Is 16-bit resolution better than 14-bit?

A 16-bit axis reports four times as many positions as a 14-bit axis. It is a useful indicator, but mechanics and software also shape precision.

Do rudder pedals use Hall effect sensors?

Some do: the Honeycomb Charlie, the VelocityOne Rudder and the Thrustmaster TPR state Hall effect sensors in our data.
